So there’s a spelling mistake, big deal. Watch the video and learn how to do the math to get your sprocket sizes right.

that red engine of honda. i got BCS for cutting gras and it has the same engine on. 5 hp and 4 stroke. OHV

So if you weighed 400 lbs, and the machine weighed 300lbs, what would be the gear ratio?
March 7th, 2010 on 7:17 pm
Damn imperial! I just need a welder to build my go cart

FIVE STARSS!!

Can you do this in metric?
March 7th, 2010 on 8:52 pm
No. Because with the speed, the air drag increases exponentially (Or even more?). So with an engine twice as stron you can’t drive twice as fast. My car has 133hp and reaches 130mph, to reach 260mph with the same car you’d need more than six times the power i think…

YOUR AWESOME DAVE AND THAT GAVE ME A LITTLE HEADACHE that was to much for today

Hp just means how fast your motor get up to the rpms and how well it will keeps the vehicle going at those rpms
March 7th, 2010 on 10:00 pm
Just HP has nothing to do with it.
It’s all about power-to-weight, gear ratios, and RPM’s.
March 7th, 2010 on 10:08 pm
David, i was a bit surprised when you said 8 hp could reach 50mph. i am building a gocart right now and have a 15 hp B&S. are you saying that i could nearly reach 90mph? and i have a turbo i am going to put on it

As a former math teacher in the American Elementary school system I commend Dave on doing such a great job explaining simple math to get people started on building a go-kart.
Great job Dave, I am always happy to see you helping.

Truthfully all the new products that come out are metric mostly but I work with mostly older cars/tractors that have mostly standard so it is impossible to stray away from standard completely. I do understand your position on the matter but I just don’t think it will happen.

then why did u waste your time to watch this.
March 8th, 2010 on 12:53 am
there is a caculater on the internet u can use too much simpler

A close ratio gearbox is one where the difference in ratio between one gear and the next is close, meaning when you change up a gear, the rpm’s won’t drop much. They’re generally used on engines with narrow powerbands and powerbands at high rpm’s so that the engine is always producing peak or near to peak horsepower.
A low powered car needs shorter and closer spaced gears than a high powered one because it doesn’t have enough power to use the longer gears

Davidsfarm, Keep up the video uploads.

we had to do it… so why cant you? I think we changed over in 1976 or so… I like standard to but the metric system is just alot easier…. everything is even!!
March 8th, 2010 on 2:57 am
so what is a close ratio gear box?! and what does it do?!
March 8th, 2010 on 3:46 am
haha theres the ‘phone of the hook dont wanna be disturbed’ trick. lol

Using feet, inches or fractions and Metric are very simple.
Besides there are plenty of conversion charts for every measurement you ever need.
Volume, liquid, dry, gas, solids, distance, weight, speed, and so on.

well I live in america to bad most of us are pretty dumbed down. Good video Dave. Alot to remember but very informative.

Good stuff dave, thanks for sharing some math equations that we otherwise, may not know.
March 8th, 2010 on 6:14 am
@ piuthemagicman: same here lol..
tried to get all of this translated into metric.. makes my head hurt -.-
basically the whole world uses the metric system.. only the americans have their inches, feet and whatever crap..
and i know that i’m gonna get lots of thumbs down for that..
too much patriotism on the american side = bad (IMHO)
“he said something against america!!!11one kill him!!!111″ .. get over it FFS..

Because that would require re teaching the entire country’s population of construction workers, engineers, drafting technicians etc.. They are teaching kids in our schools metric and standard now but its the older generation that needs to change. I prefer STANDARD over metric.. wonder why they called it standard… hmmmm think about it. And BTW metric is the easy way out just because you all cant understand fractions.
