I have the soundtrack on CD and absolutely love the music that plays in the background while Fraulein Schmitt reads to the Princess. Very stately, dignified and brings to mind a Russia of times past, when Tsars ruled. Wonderful!!

I think Wendy Hiller is just as good, or better, than Ingrid.
I love both, but wonder why Ms. Hiller was not nominated.

The German poem being read at 1:40 is “Kennst du das Land,” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
I think that scene is very nice. This movie does a good job of balancing the seriousness with many softer moments.

Alas she was not a happy lady.
She was an alcoholic and suffered from depression. Her ex husband (the actor Rex Harrison)was apparently a great comfort to her even after their divorce.
